3rd through 4th Grade:
Holidays and Holy Days — Holidays are the natural, age-old vehicle of religious socialization. Their festivities tell a story which children absorb with delight, through experiences far more than through words. The holidays/holy days chosen are ones which in some way lift up a value we affirm, or address a universal human response to life. We honor both the diversity and particularity of cultural tradition, and at the same time the commonality of the human condition. “Under the sky, all people are one family” as Sophia Fahs reminds us, quoting an old Chinese proverb. Warm interest, understanding and awareness can be generated about the ethnic traditions of our neighbors. The curriculum includes the holidays/holy days with which our own children are familiar, hoping to underscore the spiritual dimension. It includes some celebrations of famous UUs that introduce children to the heroes and heroines of our own liberal tradition.
