Junior High (11 am only):
Living in UUville — This curriculum explores Unitarian Universalist Purposes and Principles using a role-playing program on global issues and futurism. The goals of Living in UUville are to give youth: an opportunity to explore the full meaning of principles of Unitarian Universalism in our lives; an environment that encourages individual initiative as well as teamwork in pursuit of multiple goals; exposure to tasks and activities that will encourage them to think about their own religious beliefs and will promote their own spiritual growth; and a chance to stretch their own boundaries in a safe and supportive environment. The program sessions address, in increasing magnitude, the application of the principles of Unitarian Universalism to real life issues and problems of society.
Heeding the Call: Qualities of a Justice Maker — As Unitarian Universalists, we are called not to admire justice from a distance but to live right in it. This series of workshops offers a unique opportunity to engage youth in the critical work of developing skills as UUs committed to social justice. The workshops encourage youth to reflect on their own lives while also making connections with the lives lived by others. This approach increases youth’s self-awareness while also developing leadership skills. The stories offer real-life examples of people facing the complexities of living lives of justice. It is under this roof that the youth become Justice Makers. Justice does not happen automatically. Individuals must work together, learn together, listen together, laugh together, and heed the call together. This program will identify qualities needed to create justice; explore social justice as individual and collective acts of our spiritual journey; demonstrate how to engage in social justice work; connect youth’s sense of belonging by learning about the social justice actions of UUs; and provide youth with tools they can use in justice work.
